Hello!
Myself and my wife are travelling from the UK to Boston on 17th June this year. We%26#39;re staying for 4 nights in Boston and then heading to the Cape for 6 nights before heading back to Boston and then on to New York for a few days.
I have been looking around various websites (including this one) and have pretty much decided on staying in Chatham - probably at the Captains House Inn. My questions are surrounding travelling too and from Boston.
Originally we had planned to stay in Provincetown and fly with Capeair from Boston but now we%26#39;ve decided to stay a bit further south I%26#39;m not sure of the best way of getting to Chatham. I would also welcome some advice on whether or not it would be better to hire a car and drive to the Cape from Boston.
Although I am an experienced driver I have heard some horror stories of driving around Boston although we would only need to get to and from the airport to Chatham.
Any advice is greatfully received.
Thanks

It will be great for you to have a car while you are on the Cape. If you don%26#39;t want to drive until you reach the Cape however then I have a suggesgtion for you.
Take the Bonanza bus (www.bonanzabus.com) to the Hyannis transportation center. This %26#39;center%26#39; is less than 1 mile from the Hyannis airport. Then make a reservation with Enterprise Car rental. There are two locations. Off airport (which is located pretty much at the airport but is not inside the airport) has lower, off airport prices. Just be sure to check that their shorter hours/days work with your schedule. Then, call them when you arrive and they will pick you up. Just do this in reverse at the end of your Cape holiday and you will have nice, hassle-free transportation.

We did this a couple of years ago. We stayed in chatham at the Carriage House Inn and can highly recommend it. You really need acar to see the cape properly. Driving is easy,we drove out of Boston to the Cape, then over to Newport and then up to Vermont. We used Mapquest.com for printed direction and they were spot on every time. Driving in Boston is any worse than Glasgow or Manchester
Greetings!
Yes. You will want a car to explore - and Chatham is a perfect homebase. Daytrips to Provincetown, Wellfleet, the National Seashore, etc. You will have a great time!
Follow the advice from Charlie above - but it is the Plymouth Brockton Busline you want to use:
Alas, Bonanza is no more (although they may now be linked to Peter Pan buslines?)
You can catch the P%26amp;B bus directly outside baggage claim at Logan, or catch it from Boston%26#39;s downtown South Station if you do decide to stay in Boston first.
Enterprise rental car with personal pick-up at the bus center is the way to go - my folks do this all the time and find it an easier way to get to the Cape. Whenever I have flown international from the UK and then headed to the Cape, I found the P %26amp; B bus to be far more relaxing than dealing with the drive from Boston.
Hope that helps!
postscript: Might I add some days are better than other re: traffic to the Cape, regardless whether you are driving or riding the bus. Arriving on a Friday in high summer can take forever! That said, the bus is very comfortable and worth a look.
We arrive in Boston on Wed 17th June and are staying for 4 nights - not sure where yet!
Then on Sunday 21st June we head to Chatham - would this cause us any problems in terms of picking up a car, getting the bus, traffic etc?
The plan is then to head back to Boston Logan for Sat 27th June as we have a flight to NYC to catch at 1.20pm.
The bus from Boston to Hyannis sounds good as I don%26#39;t really want to trek back to the airport to pick up a car but does it run on Sunday? Can I then get a bus direct from Hyannis to Logan on Sat 21st?
I know that the Flex/
breeze bus system works well for those staying in Harwich, Orleans, Eastham, Truro and Provincetown but I am not sure that Chatham, which kind of sticks out away from the the other towns, has the same service. Your best bet is to check out this site which will give you public transportation information for use while on Cape Cod. Good luck!

The Captains House Inn is a lovely property. Most people rent cars to come to Cape Cod so that you can easily drive to stunning remote beaches, fine restuarants, great shopping and local activities.
While driving through Boston can sometimes be confusing, from the Airport to Cape Cod is direct and relatively easy. Like most large cities, you want to avoid peak business commute travel times so that you are not caught up in heavy traffic.
You might also want to contact the Captains House Inn directly to get their feedback and suggestions. Their staff is very knowledgable and helpful.
Enjoy!
In an earlier post you suggested the ';price was not an issue'; - so I would suggest that ...if you would prefer to avoid the city driving/traffic and then hire a car here on the Cape where the driving will be a bit less stressful for you.
I would take a private car transfer from Boston to your hotel and secure your car here - I understand that some rental agencies will pick you up and drp you off at your hotel - not sure about additional fees thought
PS I also agree that a car will afford you the opportunity to see more of the cape just following the bus routes
ENJOY
CapeAir has scheduled flights from Boston to Hyannis. You could land in Hyannis, rent a car there for a short drive to Chatham; time depends upon the traffic. (I%26#39;d give CapeAir a call and ask about flights to Chatham Municipal Airport too)

You could also take the ferry from Boston to Provincetown, rent a car there and drive to Chatham.
You can hire a car in Boston central and drop it off at Logan on your return. You really do need a car to explore Cape Cod.Driving down to the Cape on a Sunday is easy, as most people are heading back into Boston that day
