My family will be visiting colleges in Boston and will be staying at the Best Western Roundhouse on Mass.Ave. Can anybody tell me what type of neighborhood this is. How do we go about getting to Downtown Boston?. Are there any malls or shopping centers close by?.
Visiting Colleges In Boston
This is not the most conveniently located hotel. I%26#39;ve never stayed there and haven%26#39;t been in that area in quite some time so I%26#39;ll refrain from commenting on something I have no direct knowledge of. I highly suggest you read the review here on TA.

Then, look in this forum for suggesions of %26#39;cheap hotels%26#39; or %26#39;hotels near T%26#39;.

Yeah, unless you got an exceptional, unbeatable rate there, I would look into other options. Do a little research on the hotels portion of this site and also check travelzoo.com for great deals on Boston hotels.
The hotel has a shuttle that can take you to the nearest T station. It is not very far from downtown, but, the others are right. This is not the most convenient or choicest location. I would take a look around for something more convenenient in a nicer area even if you have to pay a bit more. There are hotel deals to be had because of the economy, although if you are coming in May, probably not so much since that is peak graduation season.
Some ';plain vanilla'; hotels downtown that offer bargain rates are
Midtown Hotel
John Jeffries House
Holiday Inn Beacon Hill
Also, Travelzoo is a pretty good source for good deals. You may be able to find a higher end hotel there for a good rate.
Also, if you are comfortable with them, you can try bidding on Priceline or Hotwire. I would think that you could pick areas that would have to put you in a better location no matter what hotel you ended up with.
Agree with all that%26#39;s been said. Also, will you be driving to Boston? If so, be aware of parking fees hotel%26#39;s charge. Which schools are you concentrating on? Perhaps we can better direct you.
I agree that this hotel is not in a very ';tourist oriented'; area. It gets most of its business from the Boston Medical Center across the street, and because it is at the intersection of some major highways. It is NOT a pedestrian-friendly location... virtually surrounded by multi-lane roads with confusing traffic signals, and since the intersection includes highway access ramps, you can%26#39;t expect any courtesy from the passing traffic. They do often have some great rates, though, especially if you add in the cost of parking. If you don%26#39;t have a car, you might consider renting one by the day to visit some of the colleges and shopping areas out of the immediate city.
The closest shopping center is Southport, but I wouldn%26#39;t recommend that. You%26#39;d be best off using the shuttle to get to the ';T'; (subway).
Ditto..I would say you may not be comfy in that area. A lot of street people begging money, selling items on the street or collecting for their ';clubs';. I would do Hotwire. There are some killer deals on 4 stars in Copley and the Financial district. I used Hotwire last May and paid 139 for 3 adults at the Westin Copley. Perfect location. I intend on using Hotwire again.
I think you mean South Bay.
No disagreement with any of the posters here. Please try to find another hotel. Trust us on this one.
The neighborhood is absolutely not a place to walk around at night. Even by day, it has a very unpleasant vibe (South Bay jail nearby, people driving in to visit their friends at the jail, panhandlers) with very poor pedestrian access to any of the destinations tourists would ordinarily find desirable.
I don%26#39;t even like to drive through, and have re-arranged my morning commute to avoid the area.
Regarding my family%26#39;s college visit to Boston. We will be visiting BU; Northeastern; Wellesley; Suffolk University; Wheelock College and Emmanuel College. We would like to squeeze in a visit to Lesley College in Cambridge. I am use to living in an inner city type area and I am mostly concerned about getting to and from the schools and being able to see the sights in Boston. Is there public transportation available with in walking distance of the hotel?.
I concur with what the other posters have noted. I guess there%26#39;s some overriding reason why you want to stay there, but I%26#39;m not sure what that is. In addition, the hotel is not located near any T Station. You would be totally reliant on the shuttle from the hotel and who knows how relaible that will be, whether it runs at night, etc.
With the exception of Wellesley College, all of the schools are clustered around the T Green Line Subway, so that a stay in Back Bay seems to be the most logical. Then you could hop on the Green Line and be at most of these within minutes.
The hotel is not located near any of the tourist sites either.
