We%26#39;re thinking of eating dinner at one of these pubs and I%26#39;m wondering what the differences are and which one you%26#39;d recommend. I know the Black Rose has live music. Does the Purple Shamrock have it also? Do you know what time the music starts and if they have it every da of the week? Which one has better food? Is there a cover charge? Do you know if they take reservations and how crowded it would be on a weeknight? Thanks for your help.
Black Rose or Purple Shamrock?
I would say the Black Rose has marginally better food and a less fratty crowd. I have no idea about reservations, and I%26#39;m pretty sure the cover charge is only in affect after 9 or 10.
Black Rose or Purple Shamrock?
I second the Black Rose
Oops - sorry, submitted too soon! As I said :) I second the Black Rose. It has a bit more of an authentic Irish feel...I mean, it%26#39;s still an American pub, but I%26#39;ve traveled through Ireland and I still love it. I%26#39;ve been at different times - happy hour, nights, and weekend days, and I can%26#39;t recall a cover charge, although I can%26#39;t say that for sure.
Go, have a pint and some good pub food, and enjoy!
I agree that of those two places, the Black Rose is a little bit more fun, and has marginally better food. (I was a HUGE fan when the Purple Shamrock was Bette%26#39;s Rolls Royce, and ate there 3-4 times a week) Less so, now.
Aside from that, I%26#39;d also suggest you check out the websites for The Bell in Hand Tavern (a couple doors away from PS), and The Plough %26amp; Stars (Central Square, Cambridge).
As far as authentic Irish bars, IMO ';the Plough'; has been my favorite for over 40 years, and is worth the short trip from downtown.
You%26#39;re not going to be blown away by the food at either. I%26#39;d recommend Kinsale in Government Center over both of those. The food is much better, they have music on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, no cover, lively but not overcrowded, and it%26#39;s just a few minutes walk from Faneuil Hall. They even have outdoor seating if the weather%26#39;s good.
The food at the Kinsale is better than either the Purple Shamrock or Black Rose. Regardless, I would consider going to dinner based on the food, and then if you want music, move on.
Weeknights should not be a problem, except possibly for Thursday.
We ate at the Black Rose on 3/16 and absolutely loved it - I had fish and chips - husband had shepard pie - we shared and were both happy - Guiness, Harp and jamesons helped too! Cheers!
