Clark University

We are going to MA to do some college tours in Feb. We plan on viewing Clark University. I have heard its not in a safe neighbor. True?? Thanks. JBJC

Clark is located in Worcester, about an hour west of Boston. While Worcester is a nice enough city, Clark is in one of its not so great areas.

I know this sounds crazy, but I went to Clark from 1983 until I graduated in 2005. Yes, night school on and off. First, Clark is on the very fringe of what is known as the the Main South area of Worcester. Around Clark itself it is very safe and has gotten a 1,000 times better over the years. As the University keeps expanding it has bought a lot of the triple deckers in the area. You would be fine in and around the campus. The heart of Main South, at least 5 blocks away if not more, is a bit seedy. But Worcester overall is very safe and Clark is exceptional. It is a very modern campus and attracts students from around the world. Good luck.

I went to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the early 90%26#39;s. After a recent visit a couple of years ago I can say that Worcester has come a long way and is much more desirable to live there compared to when I went to school. One thing nice about going to school in Worcester is that the cost of apartments isn%26#39;t outrageous like Boston.

My husband and I went also to WPI in the early 90%26#39;s and still go each year for alumni events. I agree with other alum posts that Worcester has come a long way and still growing. Another plus is being able to take courses at other Worcester colleges as part of the consortium. I knew several people that took classes at Clark and Holy Cross.

I work about 1.5 miles up Main Street from Clark, and went to college in an urban, blighted area. I think going to Clark would be no different from other city schools. There%26#39;s security on campus, and you use common sense when venturing off-campus. The Main South area is blighted; no getting around that, but you would have no reason to venture far on Main Street at night. (There is a fabulous, dirt-cheap Vietnamese restaurant on Main Street right across from the campus.) There are plenty of college-friendly restaurants and bars (when your child is of age, of course) that are in other parts of Worcester not far from the campus. Worcester has a surprisingly good art museum, wonderful restaurants, a top-notch performing arts venue (Mechanics Hall), and an active live music scene. Good luck with your tour.

While Clark enjoys a reasonably good reputation it is in a horrible area of Worcester. The Main South area of Worcester is home to prostitutes/drugs/gangs and crime. Clark is right in the center of all of that. I%26#39;m surprised to see posts saying that Worcester is on an upswing-I have lived in central Massachusetts for my whole life and can only see Worcester sliding into despair. I would not feel comfortable with my child attending Clark-if they really wanted to attend a ';city'; school I would encourage them to go to school in Boston. At least Boston has a lot of opportunities for dining and attractions. While Worcester is home to several colleges-college students are rarely seen around the city. I think they rarely leave campus-which is probably safest.

Sweetcontu, I don%26#39;t disagree that Worcester college students tend to be isolated. Holy Cross students stay on the hill, WPI in their area, etc. Worcester has many colleges but there is not that one area where you would say that it was a college part of the city. That said, I don%26#39;t think the city is ';sliding into despair'; If anything, with UMass and the bio-sciences, Worcester maybe soon at the forefront of innovation. Downtown has always struggled, but it isn%26#39;t the downtown of Springfield, Lowell, or Fall River. Main South is a challenge, but it isn%26#39;t Dorchester. Clark, which is not in the heart of Main south, is helping to transform the area. Yes, Boston might be loaded with more opportunities, but the colleges are also loaded with a heavier cost. Worcester, Clark, and the other colleges are just fine.

Well, my daughter is a Clarkie and really loves it there. Just like in any city you learn the ok areas and the areas to avoid. As for food, we%26#39;ve had many a good meal in the area. Primarily her shopping is done at the malls there or she%26#39;ll hop the train in to Boston.
