recommended route from Boston to NYC

I%26#39;ll be in Boston last week in August and renting a car. Which route do you recommend to get to NYC? What is the driving time?

I like Mass. Pike..which is 90 to 84 to 91 south to 95 south.

91 is a wide easy road to drive.

I much prefer takng the Parkways into NYC, rather than 95. Shorter distance-wise and much more pleasant - no trucks or busses and less traffic (usually, at least). 90 West (';Mass Pike) to 84 West to 91 South to 15 (look for sign saying ';Wilbur Cross Parkway';).

The Wilbur Cross Parkway becomes the Merritt Parkway in New York and then the Hutchinson River Parkway near NYC. These changes just ';happen'; - you won%26#39;t be taking exits or anything like that. I%26#39;m noting here so you don%26#39;t feel like somehow you got on the wrong road.

Hi,

I am also a fan of Alanm%26#39;s route into NYC. It%26#39;s more pleasant and picturesque than taking 95.

Another route I like, and I take frequently, is Mass Pike to I-84, and then I-84 through CT, passing through Danbury into NY State. Then, pick up I-684 South which meets up with the Hutchinson Parkway, and then into NYC.

I%26#39;m a fan of Beantownman%26#39;s route taking 684. To me, it%26#39;s much less hectic of a drive.

I don%26#39;t think we%26#39;ve answered your drive time question. You should count on 4 hours in normal traffic. Try to avoid hitting Hartford, CT at rush hour - it%26#39;s about 1 1/2 hours outside of Boston. And of course, traffic can be heavy as you get into NYC but barring any unforseen accidents or roadwork, 4 - 4 1/2 hours is almost always a reasonable estimate.

84 to 684 for me is always conjested and full of pot holes. It is two lanes for most of the ride once past Hartford.

If you decide to go 91 south...there will be a connecter a few miles before Hartford on 84. It is a toll road and goes over a bridge. The signs are well marked.

There are no tolls between 84 and 91 in Hartford. In fact, the only tolls on the 90 west to 84 west to 91 south to 15 South route is the Mass Pike (until just before NYC).

The Charter Oak Bridge which connects 84 and 91 and enables people to avoid Hartford, always had a toll. When did they remove it?

The ';Hartford By-pass';, now Route 15 between the Berlin Turnpike and the Bridge ... ramps were added to connect to Route 15 just ahead of the toll station. ... is the only way from I-91 north to I-84 east, and I-84 west to I-91 south. ...

What i use to take was the old Greyhound route which was 90W Mass Pike to 84W to 684 S to, 287 to 87 S which took me right into Mahhattan,But i go with Alan directions.

Hi,

Let me clear up the confusion regarding the Charter Oak Bridge. Having grown up in Westport CT and living in Boston for 20 years, I can drive this route with my eyes closed...or at least while on a cell phone and eating lunch (yes, I%26#39;ve seen people doing that, too).

When you take I-84 towards Hartford, as you approach the city from the East, you will see signs both for I-91 south, AND Rte. 15 South/Charter Oak Bridge.

You do NOT want to take the Charter Oak Bridge. If you do that, you end up not only paying the toll, but you end up on a four lane undivided road with traffic lights and strip malls, through the suburbs of Hartford, until it becomes the Wilbur Cross Parkway.

Here is what you do. When you approach Hartford, take the I-91 South Exit. Then, you take I-91 south until you get to Meriden. At that point, you will see a sign for an exit for Rte 15/Wilbur Cross Pkwy. This is where you want to pick up the Wilbur Cross. At that point, it%26#39;s parkway straight into the Bronx.

If you do it and be advised you are dealing with some of the worst and aggressive drivers in this country:

I 90 west to 84 East to 91 south to the Merrit pkwy which goes into the Hutchinson pkwy when you cross into NY take the cross county higway to the Henry Hudson south into the City
