My four grown daughters and I will be in Boston Thursday night, Sept 30-Oct. 3 about noon. We all like pretty much the same thing...no tours or touristy things but would like some historical places, small towns w/shops, some shopping, good food. I know I want to go to Cape Cod but that%26#39;s the only place I%26#39;m really sure of. Can you help me? Thanks.

Portsmouth NH, Newburyport, Concord, and Rockport are all small, pleasant, historic, walkable towns with a lot to see and plenty of places to buy things in. And so, believe it or not, is Providence. With all you%26#39;ll want to get to right in Boston, and the few days you%26#39;ll have, you might want to pick from just one of the above places. If it turns out to be rainy or cold the whole time you%26#39;re here you could end up not leaving the city anyway!

I agree that Rockport makes a great day trip. Not sure if you are planning to have a car, but you can take the train from North Station to Rockport (schedules at www.mbta.com). The ride is about an hour and very scenic along the coast (sit on the right side out the train leaving Boston). Within walking distance from the train station is Bearskin Neck -- an area of former fishing shacks turned little shops along the water. Its gets crowded in the summer, but late September/October is the perfect time to visit.
She%26#39;s probably all set since this post was from 5 years ago. . .
These old posts are popping up more than usual.
Enjoyed your post anyway..Bostongal.
