Boston Day Trips

We will be in Boston for 6 days %26amp; would like to see Newport, Cape Cod %26amp; Martha鈥檚 Vineyard. Would you make them day trips or would you stay the night at these locations?

I might make them day trips, but definitely not from Boston. That would be an awful lot of driving back and forth. If you want to see all of these places, my advice would be to find a place to stay two or thee nights somewhere in southeastern Massachusetts or northern Rhode Island. All three destinations would be pretty easily reachable from there.

If you wanted to make them day trips, I would suggest that you visit Ptown by ferry from Boston instead of driving. MV can be a day trip if you get up early from Boston for the drive to Woods Hole, but traffic can be heavy depending on time and day at various places along the way. The ferries there run fairly frequently, so check out the schedules. Newport, again is a couple of hour drive from Boston, but easily doable as a day trip if you wanted.

But as previously suggested, staying around the SE area of Ma would shorten most of your drives but it is still about 90 minutes to Ptown if you want to get there. You are covering alot of ground in 6 days, so don%26#39;t be too over achieving at the risk of being so tired you can%26#39;t enjoy anything.

Newport could be a day trip. It is only about an hour ride.

We have a hotel in Plymouth and plan to go from there to MV and CC - is that close enough to make it an easy day trip? Anyone know how long it takes on a Saturday morning in July to get from Plymouth to P-town? I need to be there by 9 am for a whale watching trip.

Plan on leaving no later than 6 to get up to P-town for the whale watch. Traffic is usually VERY heavy getting onto the Cape on a Saturday in July. Plymouth to Woods Hole for the ferry to MV is about an hours drive, with parking usually offsite that requires a shuttle to reach the ferry. Be sure to leave real early for that trip as well, if you want to make a full day of it.

Yes, Saturday is usual ';cottage change'; day, so traffic to vacation areas is heavy both ways. If you can go on a weekday you will be much better off.

Still, starting from Plymouth, leaving at 6:30 would leave plenty of time to catch the 9 AM whale watch out of Provincetown. I have left Boston, which is more than 1/2 hour up the road, at 6 on a July Saturday, and not hit the heavy traffic. Plymouth is even closer.

That said, is that whale watch set in stone? If not, move it. Either drive into Boston that Saturday and take the Boston whale watch, or else go to Provincetown mid-week. All whale watches end up in the same place; there is no advantage leaving from Provincetown.

The 9am whale watch is not set in stone, but it%26#39;s a great deal. Kids are FREE. So the family of 4 goes for only $80 (vs. 130). I had originally planned to go to P-town and MV on Th/F and go to Plymouth on Saturday, but after finding out about the Sat. am deal, I decide to move things around to save $$$.

I would consider doing a night in Newport. In addiotion to Newport..Bristol is nice to explore.

Once there you will discover lots of things to do. The Mansions are a good plus hour to go thru. The Marble Mansion is 2 hours with the walk thru the grounds. The Cliff walk too is a must do.

The Inn at Castle Hill is a favorite of mine. This is if you have a car. If taking the bus then I would do one day.
