Hello, we will be driving from Boston (well really the 495 area) next Thursday and we are trying to figure out the best time to leave. We want to get to NYC as early as possible but if we will hit traffic the whole way then it might make sense to wait to leave. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much!
Driving from Boston to NYC - Weekday morning
We usually go 95 south the whole way. Traffic in Providence isn%26#39;t bad, but New Haven can bog you down. If you plan it so you%26#39;re not hitting New Haven at rush hour (say 8am-10am), you should be fine.
Driving from Boston to NYC - Weekday morning
Taking 95 is long, tends to have more traffic, and is not a very nice way to go. Instead, take the Mass Pike (90 West) to 84 West to 91 South to the Wilbur Cross Parkway (Route 15). This becomes the Merritt Turnpike and the Hutchinson River Parkway into NYC.
You can actually leave the 495 area anytime after 8 AM, which allows you to miss Hartford%26#39;s rush hour. Depending on where specifically you are going in Manhattan, it should take around 3.5 hours and barring any accidents, you shouldn%26#39;t see any traffic issues until around 4 PM getting into NYC.
Where exactly on 495 are you leaving from?
Thanks so much for your replies. We are leaving from Haverhill.
Then I would follow Alan%26#39;s directions.
take 495 to 90..the pike
Actually, since you are coming from that far north, I would take 290 West from 495 to the Mass Pike. It%26#39;s a short cut that eliminates a number of miles. Just watch your speed, since 290 from 495 to Worcester usually has at least one or even two speed traps.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I will take 495 to 290 then. Would 8:00am still be a good time to leave?
Since you%26#39;ll be going on 495 for a while and driving through Worcester, I would wait until 9 or so to start.
early monrning! avoid rush hour and anytime people are going to work! Boston and NYC are both traffic capitols of the world LOL
I am willing to leave as early as 7am but I can%26#39;t really get my family of 4 up and out much earlier than that. However, I don%26#39;t want to leave that early and then be stuck in traffic so if it made sense to leave at 8 or 9 to miss most traffic I would do that as well. I guess we will just plan to leave as early as we can and hope for the best. Thanks for all your advice.
