Only a one-day visit - what should we do? Help please.

Sadly, we can only have a day trip into Boston. It%26#39;s on a Sunday in June. We%26#39;re staying in Plymouth, MA, and some have suggested we drive to Quincy Adams, park, and get the Subway from there into the city centre, getting off at Park Street. Is this a sensible travel plan?

But even after reading a fair amount about Boston, I%26#39;m stuck on how best to fill our day. We can%26#39;t do everything, but I can%26#39;t decide what we should do to get a nice %26#39;taste%26#39; of the city.

I like the idea of a Duck Tour, but with such limited time I%26#39;m not sure how sensible it would be walking over there, buying a ticket and possibly having to come back again at a later time. Do people think it%26#39;s also a bit expensive? (as an alternative, it did cross my mind to do a short trip on the inner harbour ferry).

So we could walk round the gardens and some (or all?) of the Freedom Trail, but I%26#39;m not sure how much is sensible/feasible for a leisurely day (including a stop for lunch) presuming we%26#39;ll be heading home around 5pm or so.

How would YOU plan a day trip for new visitors to the city?

On Sunday, your plan from Plymouth to take public transportation to Boston for your one day visit probably does NOT make much sense. You%26#39;ll lose too much time driving to the T, waiting for the train, and actualy going. Instead drive right in, park at the Boston Common Underground Garage, and do a tour of the Freedom Trail. Weekend rates are in place, too.

Is the Duck Tour worth it? Most people seem to think so, especially since you%26#39;re limited to a single day. What%26#39;s the difference of a few bucks if you have a chance to actualy see some of the city. Alternatively, you could take one of the trolley tours. Not as much fun, perhaps, but they have unlimited off/on priviledges. Cost might be just a little less. Or even take a guided walking tour. Boston by foot for just the Freedom Trail or bostoncitywalks.com to see more of the city.

Thank you for the suggestions. I%26#39;ll certainly look into the %26#39;driving in%26#39; option rather than the Subway (I just thought that people had a generally dim view of driving in the city).

Anybody got any more suggestions on how we could plan our day?

If you leave early ... sunday morning traffic should not be an issue .... won%26#39;t take long.

Freedom Trail / Duck Tour .. both good options or do it yourself .... Boston is very walkable.

Park as suggested above.

Fanueil Hall, North End, Beacon Hill, Commons

For one day, my suggestion is to drive into the city and park at 75 State Street Garage near Fanueil Hall for $14. The you could walk over to the nearby Long Wharf area and purchase 1 day Trolley tickets from Old Towne Trolley. It%26#39;s a good way to see different areas of the city, and you can hop on/off at each stop.

I had just one day in Boston last weekend and spent it doing the guided Freedom Trail walk (booked at visitor information as I came out of the train station - US$12) followed by the Trolley Bus Tour (booked on line before I went - about $33). I would recommend both of these - you learn much more from the guides than just wandering around yourself, and it gave me a really good overview of the city.

Boston really is a manageable size to wander round, and even as a lone female at no time did I feel unsafe. I ate at Quincy market - so many choices of food - very like Covent Garden in London, with street entertainers, and some shopping.

If you drive in on a Sunday, on street parking is free. I%26#39;m not saying you shouldn%26#39;t park in a garage, but if you see something on the street near where you end up going you can save yourself some money.
