Back Bay to Cambridge

All experts

We will be staying in the Back bay area over July 4th weekend and would like to travel over to Cambridge for dinner and to watch the fireworks.

Can anybody advise how long this trip takes by Cab and how much it would cost.

Also will there be any bridge closures on the Charles River that may prevent our trip.

Many thanks

Back Bay to Cambridge

Hi,

Very bad idea indeed. Most of the bridges over the Charles river are closed all day on the 4th. Trying to get across the river by car is very difficult.

If you are in the Back Bay and you want to get to Cambridge, I%26#39;d strongly urge you to take the T. You can take the Red Line easily to Cambridge.

As far as watching the fireworks, if you want to watch from Memorial Drive, that%26#39;s also closed to cars that day. So, your best bet is to walk there, either from the Charles/MGH station on the Boston side, or from Kendall Station on the Cambridge side. If you are coming back from dinner in the Harvard Sq. area, I%26#39;d suggest you take the Red Line to Charles/MGH and then just walk up onto the Longfellow bridge and watch the fireworks from there.

Do you know where in Cambridge you are planning to go? East Canbridge is also served by the Lechmere stop on the Green Line.

On July 4th, it might be just as easy to walk though, depending on the part of Cambridge you end up in.

Thanks Quincey and Veronica

I am thinking about dinner at the Royal Sonesta

Is this on any of the T lines ?

Cheers

It%26#39;s about a 5-10 minute walk from the Lechmere stop on the Green Line.

The Green Line goes through the Back Bay, so you just want to get on any Lechmere-bound train (as opposed to a train that terminates in Goverment Center or North Station). You just have to look on the front of the train to find it%26#39;s final destination.

The Sonesta would be an easy and pleasant walk across either the Museum of Science Bridge or the Longfellow Bridge. You could also walk to the Lechmere or Kendall T station, but walking across the river wouldn%26#39;t be much farther.

Once you%26#39;re back in Boston, you could get a cab, take the T, or just keep walking. The T might be rather crowded, and if it%26#39;s a nice night, it could be a lovely walk. Of course, depending on where in Back Bay you%26#39;re staying, it might be more than you%26#39;re up for.

Personally, I always think first of walking in Boston. If that isn%26#39;t practical, I take the T. Cabs, for me, are a rare last resort.

Hi,

Thanks all for the excellant advise..

We are going to be staying in the Copley Square Hotel

If it isn%26#39;t too long of a walk we may take that option..especially on the way back.

Hi,

If the weather is nice, it%26#39;s a very nice and not very difficult walk from the Copley Sq. hotel to the Sonesta. Given that the Longfellow bridge is closed to traffic that day, you can walk over the bridge and be right near the Sonesta. I%26#39;d say it%26#39;s probably a 45 minute very leisurely walk.
