Where do I stay in Cape Cod

Hi, we are Aussies and are wanting to experience Cape Cod. We will be arriving into Boston and I quite like the sound of some of the drives, they seem to be very scenic.

We have no idea where to stay on the Cod though and by that I mean which town? We want somewhere quaint and picturesque which will give us a true experience instead of the commercial one.

We have 2 children aged 3 and 5 years. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thanks so much.

It really helps to know what time of year you%26#39;re looking to be on the Cape. Obviously June to September is the height of the tourist season so places will be packed and traffic will be heavy. September and October are probably perfect - the crowds are gone but the seasonal places are still open and the weather is glorious. Can I assume your children are not in school so you have some flexibility in planning?

There are a couple of larger towns on the Cape - Hyannis, Provincetown and Falmouth. I happen to like Provincetown the best, as it%26#39;s cheek to jowl with art galleries and good restaurants and such. But, as an artist%26#39;s colony it might be a bit on the boring side for your little ones. Towns like Truro, Eastham and Wellfleet are towns on the outer cape that still retain much of their times-gone-by charm.

The Cape Cod National Seashore is a New England treasure. Make sure to spend time here.

I would also vote for those towns on what we call the ';lower Cape'; including Truro, Eastham, and Wellfleet since they are a little less commercialized and have fabulous national beaches nearby for the kids. When you are planning this trip, if you must come between June and early September, try to avoid arriving and leaving on Saturdays and Sundays since the traffic on and off the Cape is horrible then. Off season is much better, mid week is always better to minimize time sitting in the car with two little ones. Rt 6 will take you from one end to the other but is mostly a two lane boring ';highway'; so whenever possible, get off that onto smaller roads- hopefully you will get a good map to show all the smaller roads to maximize the enjoyment of the true Cape. IMHO, avoid Hyannis which is very commercialized.

You should really post that on the Cape Cod forum:

I%26#39;m sure the regulars there would greatly appreciate it if you gave more information, like when you%26#39;re going, how much you want to pay, what you want nearby, etc. And you%26#39;ll get much better answers, too!!

Thank you so much for your replies and advice. We will be going in the height of summer, in mid July and can easily avoid Saturday and Sunday travelling as our time is our own.

I will have a look at all the towns that have been suggested.

Thanks RANTIPOLE for your advice, I will indeed post it on the %26#39;Cape Cod%26#39; forum and include the info u suggest!

The very END of Cape Cod (the tip) is called Provincetown- it is a well known gay town, the views and the shops are amazing. there are great restaurants and shops. you can walk on sand dunes, and basically see where island stops! its about a 3 hour ride from Boston, and well worth it for a day trip. so if you are open minded, its a fabulous spot. friendly people and small narrow streets to walk thru the stores. have fun

Chatham, Wellfeleet, Truro, P-Town.

Take the plunge, Marthas Vineyard and or Nantucket.

Nantucket and Marthas vineyard are both beautiful. You can rent a cottage for a week or few days. VRBO is also a great way to get a deal on rentals.

How long is your stay on the Cape? There are so many neat b%26amp;b%26#39;s dotted throughout the cape, many are former Captain;s home which makee the experience special, but not sure which one%26#39;s take kids. If you stay towards Ptown, that is a mostly quiet part of the cape(except for ptown) with great beaches while the other end has Falmouth and Woods Hole with very easy access to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard (45 minute ferry ride to another world). No car is necessary there as there is terrific bus transportation to all the towns or there are tours as well.

Here is a suggestion, depending on how long you are in boston, there is a ferry to ptown. You could visit it that way and then stay at the other end of the cape so you can get out to MV
