I%26#39;m looking for a jazz club (non-smoking) where you can chill in the dark, have some wine, lay low and have a nice evening. I%26#39;m hoping to find a place that does not have an outrageous cover charge. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Best jazz club in metroBoston or suburbs?
Try Wally%26#39;s, on Mass Ave. It%26#39;s got a slightly divier atmosphere, VERY laidback, no or low cover (in the $3 range if any), good drink selection and the best performances in town (and try the screwdriver with Mandarin vodka...)
For something more upscale, Ryles in Inman Square (which has a new bbq restaurant in it) is an excellent choice.
Top of the line is the Regatta Bar, near Memorial Drive, but that%26#39;s got a much higher monetary commitment (and some fantastic major label acts.)

Every jazz club in this state is now non-smoking, by law. (I%26#39;ve groused about this elsewhere.)
Scullers, in the Doubletree Suites Hotel on Soldiers Field Rd, is a nice place to catch some fairly well-known performers. It%26#39;s a dark-paneled, cozy room with fantastic river views. Cover charge is included in the ticket price.
I enjoy shows at Johnny D%26#39;s in Davis Square, right across from the Red Line station of the same name. But it%26#39;s more of a blues/funk club by and large. Johnny D%26#39;s and Ryles both put their hands in your pocket twice: once if you order food, then again for cover.
The Zeitgeist Gallery on Cambridge Street in Inman Square frequently has planned and impromptu jazz going on.
It%26#39;s not a nightclub, but the Berklee Performance Center is a good jazz venue. Time it right and you could be catching some stellar student and/or faculty gigs at little or no cost.
Keep an eye on the Globe Calendar for appearances by artists you follow. By seeing them live you might discover a new hangout in the process.
Wally%26#39;s is fun. Definitely go.
