Hello,
My wife and I (from the UK) are spending a week in Cape Ann at the end of July, followed by a week in Boston. We will be renting a vacation apartment in downtown Boston, and probably won%26#39;t rent a car.
On our last day, we will need to vacate the apartment at around 11am, but we won%26#39;t be checking in at Logan airport till around 6:30pm. We want to be able to make the most of our last day in Boston, but obviously that won%26#39;t work out so well if we are pulling our suitcases behind us everywhere!
Is there anywhere in downtown Boston, maybe a railroad station, where we can leave our luggage in a locker, or something like that? We will have two quite large and heavy suitcases. I guess that because of security concerns, luggage lockers may not be as common as they used to be.
Or does anyone have any other suggestions as to what we might do?
Thanks so much
Somewhere to store our luggage?
I%26#39;m honestly not sure whether there are lockers and/or an attended left luggage facility at South Station.
I think my first suggestion would be to check with the people you%26#39;re renting the apartment from, and see whether you could leave your bags with them for the afternoon. Even if they%26#39;re not on site, I imagine somebody will be coming in to clean, and I would think there should be a good possibility of working something out along those lines.
I have recently read on this forum about leaving luggage at a hotel, for a fee. I have never done this or even thought about it, except when I have been staying at that same hotel myself. But apparently it is an available option.
Somewhere to store our luggage?
Interesting question (for us). Massport says no lockers at Logan as has been noted. A search of prior posts seems to say that there may be lockers at South Station but I am not sure how large or if you need a train ticket to use it. Maybe calling the airline to see if you can check the bags early but with all the 9/11 regs probably not. It may be worth it to rent the cheapest hotel room you can find at a motel 6 or the like and just leave the bags even if you don%26#39; stay overnight. There is a Motel 6 Boston South in Braintree that is 15 minutes from downtown. Rate is around $72. Or rent a car for the day and take a daytrip to Cape Cod.
Some hotels will take luggage from non guests. You can try the Taj at Arlington and Newbury. The cost is something you will have to work out with the doorman. Probably $10.00 for the day for several bags.
The only lockers available that I%26#39;m aware of are on the fourth floor of the South Station Bus Depot. I%26#39;m not sure how large they are or whether they will fit your needs, but that%26#39;s the only place I know. I agree that it would be best to negotiate something with the folks you%26#39;re renting the apartment from.
Can%26#39;t vouch for reliability/safety etc. but these folks will hold luggage: Package Express 617-526-1810 on the 5th floor of South Station. They hold bags at $5 a piece. Weekdays open until 10 p.m, weekends only until 5 p.m. Hope that helps.
I agree with the suggestion of checking with a number of higher end hotels downtown. I think they would be happy to oblige for a nominal fee.
You could try the InterContinental or the Fairmont Battery Wharf, and then take a water taxi from either location to Logan after you retrieve your bags.
Mahj%26#39;s memory is better than mine. It is Package Express on the 5th floor of the Bus Depot at South Station.
Wow, thanks for all the replies so far, loads of great suggestions!
I will email the people renting to us, and also investigate the possibility of leaving bags at a hotel. I%26#39;ll call the place at the bus station also and try to get an idea of locker size.
The idea of renting a cheap motel room is a good one, because it would also allow us to freshen up and change our clothes before we go to the airport.
I like the idea featuring the water taxi - I didn%26#39;t realise you could get to and from Logan airport that way.
The car rental idea is a good one too - I will look into that further. We were originally going to rent a car for the whole week while in Boston, but decided we didn%26#39;t need to. We%26#39;ve saved money on that, so spending of it some on renting a car for one day wouldn%26#39;t be a problem.
Thanks again - any further ideas are still very welcome!
Where exactly is the apartment you%26#39;re renting? That would help give better tips. ';Downtown'; could feasibly mean a variety of areas.
