Driving out of Boston

We%26#39;re hiring a car in Boston to travel around the New England area. As we%26#39;re coming from Australia, we%26#39;ll be trying to adjust to driving on the other side of the road etc. I%26#39;ve heard Boston is very difficult to navigate in and out of. Would we be better renting from Boston itself (Avis at Back Bay), Logan airport or would it be easier for us if we rented from Thrifty at Cambridge? Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

It all depends if you are going to do a tour of New England 1st and then staying in Boston i would rent the car at the airport, tour around and return the car, there is no need for a car in Boston itself we hired a car in Boston last year used a sat nav and i still took a few wrong turns ( wife reckons it was the fact satnav voice was female ) outside of Boston i found it ok (drive on the same side in S.Wales) but am not daunted doing it again this year hiring car from the airport driving down to Cape Cod for 1 week then back to Boston for the 2nd week.

If you are worried about this, I%26#39;d say airport. Better signage and access to major roads without lots of side-street driving.

I would avoid renting from Cambridge and agree that the Airport has better signage and access to major routes.

It partly depends on which direction your are going. If you are going west, it%26#39;s pretty easy to get on the Pike westbound from Back Bay.

I would also suggest the airport. I find it a lot easier to acclimate the other side of the road on a highway as opposed to navigating narrower city streets.

If money is an issue, I found it almost 1/2 the price to rent away from the airport than at Logan! But I don%26#39;t have any advice about traffic/roads...

Well I have done the same in London and Dublin so understand your concern. It%26#39;s not horrid driving out of BOS if you leave before or after typical rush hour times. Plan your trip considering work traffic and holiday or weekend traffic. Logan is closest to highways where as Back Bay and Cambridge will involve driving thru neighborhoods to get to a highway.
